The Godfather

Book Cover: The classic cover/movie poster. What need is there for any other version?
Author: Mario Puzo, straight out of Hell’s Kitchen, NY.

Category: American Literature, contemporary literature

Why I Read It: While I’ve always vaguely known that the movie is always presented as Mario Puzo’s The Godfather and not just The Godfather I was really surprised when I saw this book on a shelf. It never clicked with me that there was a novel before the movie. So I picked it up.

Reading Time Period: August 6, 2010-August 13, 2010.

Book Printing and Condition: Printed in 1983 by Signet. Whoever had this book originally bought it from Wal-Mart, probably recently, before handing it off. I’m not even sure this other person read it, it’s in such good condition. It looks like it’s right off the shelf.

Where I bought it: The Salvation Army in Cheyenne, WY, for fifty cents.

Time's List of the 100 Best Novels

Time made this list back in 2005, and it's been heavily referred to since. It's incomplete, a fact which Time admits to by explaining that novels must have been released while Time was in print and must have been originally printed in English, but a lot of these novels are pieces of work that reappear in list after list. Which is too bad, because I don't know anybody who reads this little publication anyway.

The Novel 100: The List

The Novel 100: A Ranking of the Greatest Novels of All Time, written by Daniel S. Burt, is one of the few books I took from the library and haven't bought...yet. I have a growing list of books I have read but don't have a copy of and want a copy of, but seeing as how I'm already trucking my weight and more in books in September more than halfway across the country, I think I can wait on purchasing those.

This is the first in a few posts of just lists. Blogger's restrictions on the amount of characters I can have in my labels is frustrating beyond belief, so instead of putting in, say 'Novel 100' or 'Aurora Winner' in the labels, I'll just put that at the end of each post with a link to the correct list, and the list will of course link back to the books as I read them. More work? Yes. Am I crazy enough to kind of love it? Absolutely.

Before the list, I will say I highly recommend this book for anyone who loves having this kind of thing in their collection. Burt, like any good literary critic, is highly opinionated, and isn't going to sugar coat his opinions just in case someone doesn't agree. If you don't agree, write your own damn paper.
